Sports cards deserve the same care as Pokémon cards
A dented corner or a light crease can wipe a big chunk off the value of a rookie card. For Australian collectors, that might be a Panini Prizm NBA rookie, an AFL Select Footy Stars card, an NRL Traders insert or a Topps Chrome soccer refractor.
Most restoration content online focuses on Pokémon. Sports cards are built differently, though. They use thicker stock, chrome finishes, jersey patches and on-card autographs, and each of those needs its own approach.
At Card Care, our Sydney studio restores NBA, AFL, NRL, rugby, soccer and other sports cards for collectors right across Australia. This guide covers what can be fixed, what can't, and how to tell if your card is worth restoring before you send it for grading.
Common damage on NBA, AFL, NRL and soccer cards
Sports cards often live harder lives than TCG cards. They get traded in schoolyards, kept in shoeboxes, pinned to walls and pulled from packs in a rush. These are the problems we see most often.
- Corner dings and lifts. The most common defect on sports cards, especially vintage AFL and NRL cards from the 80s and 90s.
- Dents and indents. Often caused by rubber bands, binder rings or pressing a pen on a card stack.
- Creases. Light surface creases and bends from handling or posting without a top loader.
- Warping and curling. Chrome and foil cards are prone to curling, particularly in humid Australian summers.
- Surface scratches. Chrome, Prizm and refractor surfaces show fine scratches and scuffs very easily.
- Fingerprints, oils and residue. Shiny chrome stock picks up prints the moment it is handled.
- Water damage. From storage in garages, sheds or damp rooms.
What sports card restoration can and can't fix
Restoration corrects physical damage while keeping the card original. We never recolour, repaint, trim or add printed material. Every card is inspected under 40× magnification and blue light throughout the process.

Whitening is the big one for sports cards. Once the ink is physically gone from an edge or corner, fixing it would mean adding colour back, which we don't do. If your card is mostly whitening, restoration is unlikely to help its grade.

How different sports cards are handled
NBA cards: Prizm, Select and Optic chrome
Modern NBA cards are mostly chrome or Prizm stock. The glossy surface makes them look incredible but also shows every scratch, print line and fingerprint. Surface cleaning and polishing under magnification is often what separates a PSA 9 from a PSA 10 on these cards.
AFL cards: vintage Scanlens to modern Select
Vintage AFL cards are printed on thinner, softer stock and usually come to us with soft corners, dings and surface grime. Modern Select AFL releases have their own issues, including curling foils and edge chipping. Both can benefit from careful dent, corner and surface work.
NRL and rugby cards
NRL Traders, Elite and older rugby league sets are often stored in binders or albums. That means ring dents, page-pressure indents and warping are common. Flattening and dent correction can make a big difference to presentation.
Soccer cards: Topps Chrome, Panini and Match Attax
Topps Chrome and Merlin refractors share the same scratch-prone chrome surface as NBA Prizm. Older Panini and sticker-era cards tend to need flattening and corner work instead.
Autographed and patch cards
Autographs and jersey patches add value and risk. Tell us about any signature, patch or relic when you submit, so we can assess those areas separately before any work begins. Thick patch cards also need different pressing settings to standard cards.

Getting sports cards ready for PSA, BGS or CGC
Graders score sports cards on four things: centering, corners, edges and surface. Restoration can't change centering, but corners, edges and surface are exactly what we work on.
A fingerprint or a speck of dust on a chrome rookie can be the difference between a 9 and a 10. That is why many collectors send cards for a GradePrep clean before submitting, even when there is no visible damage. Every GradePrep order also includes a professional grade estimate, so you know what to expect before paying grading fees.
Already graded? If you think a slabbed card deserves a higher grade, our Slab Crack service removes it from the holder so it can be assessed, prepared and resubmitted. A previous grade doesn't guarantee a higher one next time, and the final call always sits with the grading company. Read more in Slab Cracking: Why Collectors Remove Cards From Graded Cases.

Sports card restoration from anywhere in Australia
Our studio is in Burwood, Sydney, but you don't need to live nearby. Collectors in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and regional areas can send cards to us with a tracked, insured service. International submissions, including from New Zealand, are welcome too.
A few packing tips for sports cards:
- Put each card in a penny sleeve, then a top loader or card saver.
- Sandwich the cards between two pieces of cardboard so they can't bend.
- Use a padded mailer or small box, never a plain envelope.
- Insure the parcel to the value of the cards inside.
Sydney collectors can drop off in person at A/37A Burwood Rd, Burwood NSW 2134. Appointments are available via WhatsApp.
Sports card restoration FAQ
Can you restore vintage AFL and NRL cards?
Yes. Vintage cards on thinner stock often respond well to dent, corner and surface work. Whitening and missing stock can't be restored.
Will restoration damage the autograph on my card?
We assess signed areas separately and discuss any risk with you before advanced work begins. Always mention autographs when you submit.
Is restoration worth it for a low-value base card?
Usually not. Restoration makes the most sense for rookies, numbered parallels, autographs and vintage cards where a higher grade adds real value.
Can you remove scratches from Prizm and chrome cards?
Minor surface scratches and scuffs can often be reduced with polishing. Deep scratches that cut through the print layer can't be fully removed.
How long does sports card restoration take?
Most orders take 1–3 weeks from check-in, plus postage time.
